The Spanish's group of World Heritage Cities was founded on September 17th, 1993, and is made up of thirteen municipalities spread across the geography that share this UNESCO declaration. Its objective is to act in unison in defence of the cultural heritage of these cities, just as the maintenance and the promotion of certain ways of life that these historical centres needs. The cities of this group are: Alcalá de Henares, Ávila, Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Ibiza/Eivissa, Mérida, Salamanca, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia, Tarragona y Toledo.
CATHEDRAL CITIES is a national tourist and cultural cooperation network that has been set up as an independent non-profit-making organisation under the protection of Constitutional Law 1/2002 of 22nd March and complementary regulations, with full legal and public personality.
The network was set up in Plasencia on 8th February 2006 with a total of twelve founder members to represent the cities of Avila, Badajoz, Baeza, Burgos, Córdoba, Coria, Cuenca, El Burgo de Osma, León, Salamanca, Zaragoza, and Plasencia. Six new members later joined: Alcalá de Henares and Jaén (13/09/06), Lugo and Lleida (09/03/07), and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tudela (06/05/08) to give a current total of 18 towns or cities.
According to the charter that governs the operation of the Network, its objectives are:
a) Taking joint action to promote and defend the urban, architectural, environmental, historical, and cultural heritage of the municipalities of which it is formed, in particular their cathedral heritage, and carrying out common projects and proposals to be presented and processed before Spanish administrations and world institutions.
b) Establishing policies for exchanging experiences and results regarding matters raised and resolved in each of the member municipalities, thus contributing to the international projection and the mutual knowledge and respect of peoples, cultures, and traditions, and the building of Europe.
c) Planning and developing a policy of tourist production and promotion and the dissemination of images so as to correspond to the interests of the member municipalities of the Association.
d) Planning a tourist and cultural policy in keeping with its objectives.
Mediante la Ley 2/1991, de 14 de marzo, se autorizó la creación de la empresa pública "Sociedad de Promoción del Turismo de Castilla y León, S.A." (SOTUR, S.A) con la finalidad de promocionar y potenciar la actividad del sector del turismo de la Comunidad de Castilla y León.
Los estatutos recogen como fines principales:
• El diseño y la ejecución de campañas para la promoción del turismo regional.
• La programación y promoción de ofertas turísticas nuevas, incluidas iniciativas para la creación de infraestructuras.
• La información turística regional de carácter institucional.
• Gestión y administración de la Residencia de Tiempo Libre "La Casona del Pinar".
• Participación en ferias y certámenes turísticos, nacionales e internacionales.
